About Giclée, on Canvas and Paper
Giclée is a French word meaning, "a spraying of ink" (pronounced "zhee-clay"). With the advent of giclée, the art of reproducing fine art works has become even more precise. Each piece of canvas or paper is carefully hand mounted onto a drum, which rotates during printing. Exact calculations of hue, value and density are achieved by directing over four million droplets of ink through four printer nozzles. This produces a combination of 512 chromatic changes (with over three million colors possible).

Giclées have the highest apparent resolution available today - as high as 1,800 dpi - because a variable dot size is used to create the density of color on the print, instead of equally sized dots which can only achieve an effect of 600-1000 dpi. In addition, since no screens are used, the prints have a higher apparent resolution than lithographs and a color range that exceeds that of serigraphy. Displaying a full color spectrum, giclée prints capture every nuance of an original and have gained wide acceptance from artists and galleries throughout the world.

An edition of fine art prints is a collaboration between the artist and specially trained printing crafts persons. All of Edward Gordon's giclée editions have been printed by Hunter Editions, of Kennebunkport, Maine.

All the cutting-edge digital technology in the world means nothing without the highest quality inks. In recent years, significant advances in giclée inks have resulted in prints with broader, more saturated color ranges, as well as dramatic improvements in color permanence. At Hunter, we realize that the best results for your work can only happen using the best combination of ink and paper, which is why we make it a point to stay current on all advancements in digital printing technology.

As Iris giclées have evolved, the permanence of the inks has improved steadily, to the point where a typical Iris giclée now withstands fading for 30-60 years. Ongoing advancements in ink technology are yielding remarkable results, including new inks that remain stable for up to 75 years.
